Resources required

Procedure

  • Explain that the pupils are going to hold a debate about the best way to protect forests – should they be protected from all types of development or should they be sustainably managed?
  • Ask each group to prepare a statement that sets out their position and uses a maximum of 3 key bullet points to explain their reasoning.
  • Debate (whole class)
  • Invite a group to begin the debate by presenting their statement. Invite others to comment on the statement and present their own statements.

Plenary

  • Invite pupils to make closing statements and proposals.
  • Vote on the proposals.

Extension

Create a set of rules for the use of forest products at home, in the office or school, think about what to buy, how it should be used and what should happen to it once it’s no longer needed.

Evaluation

  • Walk around the classroom or school with a partner.
  • What makes a product or material eco, ‘green’, renewable, sustainable or environmentally friendly?
  • List any products that fall into these criteria.
