Learn: Poverty and the environment

This is the set of three Learn posters produced with support from the UK government's Department for International Development (DFID). They're designed to help students build their understanding of the links between poverty and the environment.

Curriculum links

These Learn activities support study in some of the key concepts of the Global Dimension in Education - global citizenship, diversity, interdependence, social justice and sustainable development. They cover elements of the science, geography and citizenship curriculum at Key Stage 2 and 3.

In Scotland, these activities support some of the key concepts of the Curriculum for Excellance 'Developing Global Citizens' interdisciplinary themes and cover elements of the science and social studies curriculum areas. They also link to the Eco Schools 'Sustaining our World' and 'Biodiversity' topics.

Madeira River

The first poster explores the relationship between people and the environment in the Amazon, with a particular focus on the Madeira River. The poster explores the link between poverty and the environment within the context of climate change.


Development

Learn DFID Development

This poster is the second in this series and looks at the links between poverty and environmental destruction, and is accompanied by Children of the Amazon film.  The poster focusses on the Brazilian Amazon in Latin America and the nature and impact of change within the region: the online activities will help you to broaden your explanation.


Climate change

Learn DFID Climate change

This poster is the last in this series and explores climate change by looking at the impact of human activity in Latin America and the UK. WWF is working is working with governments, businesses and communities to tackle climate change. International agreements, cleaner power, energy efficiency, protection of forests and changing the way we live can all help to combat climate change. The poster is supported by a set of online activities.
