A commitment to support and expand protected areas was made in 2014 by the partners in ARPA - the Amazon Region Protected Areas programme, which we helped set up in 2002.
Another good news story was the cancelling – or at least postponement for 10 years – of two dams that were being considered inside Juruena National Park, one of Brazil’s most important natural environments. There was concern over the social and environmental costs of the two new hydropower dams, including flooding of some areas.
WWF-Brazil responded with a big public campaign (which we supported in the UK), focusing on the natural value of the park – and the fact that other, less damaging sources of renewable energy are available for Brazil. We believe this pressure helped persuade Brazil’s government to drop the dams from their latest 10-year energy plan.
