Commenting on, the first cargo vessel to pass through the Russian Arctic on a one-off trial journey between Vladivostok and St Petersburg, WWF Polar Chief Advisor, Rod Downie said:

"The Arctic is in meltdown and that is opening new high-risk shipping routes. But this ‘new norm’ with lower sea ice and open seas is already having profound effects on people and nature. So, in addition to strengthening shipping regulations to ensure it is both safe and environmentally responsible, we critically need to tackle climate change head-on with deep and rapid cuts to our carbon emissions. That means a complete end to our contribution to climate change by 2050.”
