Heathrow Third Runway Threat to Climate Action
Commenting on plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport ahead of the commons vote, James Beard, climate change specialist at WWF said:
“MPs who voted for the Climate Change Act or celebrated the Paris Climate Agreement should vote against a third runway at Heathrow. We can live up to our global commitments to tackle climate change or we can build a third runway. But as it currently stands, it's almost impossible for us to do both. Aviation is a major driver of climate change and adding a third runway at Heathrow would increase the airport's carbon emissions by 50%. If we want to protect our world, the government needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with a credible plan to deal with soaring aviation emissions."
