The impact of the extractive industry (commercial mining and oil and gas exploration and extraction) upon natural World Heritage Sites (WHS) has recently emerged as an issue of concern. In order to better understand the issue, WWF-UK conducted a global assessment of extractive activity (defined as the commercial exploration, extraction and processing of minerals, metals, hydrocarbons and other geological materials) within natural and mixed WHS in July 2015.

This document outlines the results of this research and is a global assessment of extractives activity in natural World Heritage Sites.
