Illegal wood for the European market

31 March 2009

An analysis of the EU import and export of illegal wood and related products
July 2008
This report is based and adapted from a broader study by WWF-Germany

Illegal logging is a pervasive problem of major international concern, as it leads to deforestation, one of the main causes for climate change. Illegal logging for international markets is often a form of organised crime. Like other criminal activities it takes place covertly. This is why no one can calculate the quantity of wood of illegal origin in international trade with exact certainty. This study thus aims to give an estimate of the orders of magnitude of timber from illegal sources which reach the European market.
