Build a
twig raft
Get ready to set sail on a mini adventure with our fantastic floating creation!
You will need
- Six twigs roughly the same length (about 15cm)
- Two thinner, shorter twigs
- Thin stick for the mast
- Paper
- A ball of string
- Scissors

Step one
Place your twigs in a row. Ask a grown-up to help cut them if they need trimming to be roughly the same length.

Step two
Lie the two smaller twigs across your row of twigs near each end. Again, you can ask a grown-up to trim the ends if they’re too long.

Step three
Tie the string around the end of one of the short twigs, then wrap the string in and out of each of the longer twigs underneath, tying them to the shorter twig. Tie a tight knot when you get to the end.

Step four
Repeat this with the other short twig. This side is slightly more fiddly! You might need to cut a length of string to be able to thread it through the twigs (it will need to be roughly eight times the length of your short stick). Trim the ends of all the knots.

Step five
Next you’ll need to make a mast and sail. Take a piece of paper, roughly 10 by 15cm (depending on the size of your raft). You can decorate this if you want to. Poke the thin stick through the paper near the bottom and again near the top.

Step six
Slot the mast between the two middle twigs of your raft’s base, next to one of the shorter twigs, and secure it in place with some more string. Once that’s done, you’re ready to set sail!
