Make your own
hiking stick
All explorers need a sturdy stick. Why not make your own unique hiking pole?
You will need
- A large stick
- Yarn or string
- Natural items you’ve found, like pine cones, leaves and empty seed heads (remember to only use things that have fallen to the ground – don’t pick anything or damage plants)

Step one
Find a stick that’s the right height for you to hold comfortably while you’re standing up. You’ll also need to find some interesting things to attach to your hiking stick – this could be things like pine cones, leaves, bits of fern or branches.

Step two
Wind your string or yarn around the bottom of the stick. If you wind over the end of the string this should hold it in place.

Step three
Keep winding the string around the stick until you’re ready to attach something. Hold the item against the stick and wind the string tightly around both of them until it’s attached.

Step four
Carry on winding your string or yarn up the stick, adding as many items as you like as you go.

Step five
If you run out of string, or want to change the colour of yarn, just tie the two bits together and keep on winding.

Step six
When you get to the end of your stick, secure the end of the string with a knot. And you’re good to go!
