Create a
nature book
Keep special notes in this brilliant nature book. Make one for every season!
You will need
- Thin card
- Paper
- Hole punch
- Pencil
- String
- Twig
- PVA glue
- Petals or leaves to decorate (remember to only use things that have already fallen to the ground – don’t pick anything)

Step one
Cut two pieces of card about 10 by 15 cm – these will be the front and back covers of your book. Paint the front cover with a thin layer of PVA glue and put your decorations on top of the glue. When you’re happy with how they look, paint more PVA over the top and leave it to dry.

Step two
Cut the paper into sheets the same size as your covers.

Step three
Punch four holes evenly along the edge of your front cover

Step four
Put the cover on top of your paper and mark where the holes are, then punch holes through the paper and back cover.

Step five
Measure your stick against the edge of the book and ask a grown-up to help trim it to size if you need to.

Step six
Thread the string (about 50cm) through the bottom hole in the covers and pages and tie it around the twig with a knot.

Step seven
Take the string up along the edge of your book to the second hole. Thread it through the hole, then around the stick and back through the same hole again. Remember that the string needs to be tight enough to hold your book together but not too tight or you won’t be able the turn the pages.

Step eight
Turn the book over and repeat the threading with the third and fourth hole.

Step nine
When you’ve threaded the hole at the top, secure the string around the twig with a knot.

Step ten
Trim the ends of your string to tidy them up. And there you go – a unique nature notebook!
