Step one

Download, print and then cut out the template (below), or trace it onto thin card before cutting it out. Then make a second copy and place the two templates on top of each other. Add large ears for a mouse, or a head shape for an owl. Decorate the mouse ears and the owl’s face.

Step two

Cut lengths of yarn in colours for your chosen animal. Wrap the yarn around the card template, alternating the colours for the owl. Keep wrapping until you get a full, fluffy pom-pom.

Step three

Ask your grown-up to help with this bit. Using sharp scissors, carefully slide the point of the scissors between the two pieces of card at the ears, then cut the yarn all the way around the pom-pom. Hold the middle tightly so that the loose strands don’t fall away.

Step four

Take a long piece of yarn and tie between the two pieces of card as tightly as possible, leaving long tails to make a loop and hang your pom-pom.

Step five

Holding the pom-pom yarn out of the way, carefully trim the card back to the middle circle – be careful not to cut the ears or head shape! For the mouse, glue or tie on buttons for the eyes and nose. For the owl, glue the two card head pieces together with the hanging loop sandwiched between them. Using scissors, trim the pom-pom into a neat shape.
