Why 2030 matters?

By 2030, governments have promised to deliver more than 250 international commitments across nature, people and climate. These include the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the targets under the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and 2030 Global Stocktake (GST) outcomes of the Paris Agreement.

Together, these commitments set out a vision for a thriving natural world, a fairer future for people and a safer climate. Yet, the majority are currently off track.

With 2030 fast approaching, governments need to turn promises into action and accelerate delivery. Because so many commitments across nature, climate and people share the same deadline, their collective success or failure will shape trust in international cooperation and the ability of global agreements to deliver real-world change.

What happens between now and 2030 will shape what comes next. Success will raise ambition and confidence for future agreements, while failure risks weakening trust in global commitments.

Time is running out. The window to act is closing. Governments need to move beyond commitments and deliver the changes needed.

We have brought together a register of trusted trackers that monitor progress towards 2030 commitments across nature, climate and people. Regularly updated and easy to navigate, it provides the latest findings from each tracker. Where more than one tracker covers the same commitment, we explain how they differ, so you can navigate to the one most relevant to your work.

  1. End ongoing wars and redirect military expenditures toward peace and human development;
  2. Establish an ambitious timeline for SDG implementation;
  3. Organise implementation around six major transformations;
  4. Adopt long-term investment plans to support these transformations;
  5. Strengthen continental, regional, and local cooperation and investment;
  6. Introduce new global taxes to finance global public goods;
  7. Develop global governance frameworks for AI, biotechnology, and other emerging technologies; and
  8. Establish new UN campuses in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

  • Food security: 123.7 million people facing moderate or severe food insecurity associated with an increase in droughts and heatwaves.

Targets of Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy in the Sustainable Development Goals

Progress of Target SDG7 (2026)

  • Clean energy access: The global rate of access to electricity has stalled at 92 percent, with 655 million people were still without electricity. Achieving the 2030 target will require the pace of progress to more than triple to 1.35 percent per year.
  • Cleaning cooking access: An estimated 75 percent of the global population have access to clean cooking. Projections of current trends suggest that 79 percent of the global population will have access by 2030, leaving 1.8 billion people mainly reliant on polluting forms of cooking.
  • Renewables count towards 18.0% of the total final energy consumption. Building on the strong momentum for renewables will be critical, as current trends remain below what is needed to fully align with SDG7 and the commitment to triple global renewable energy capacity.

  • Indicator 1 on Red List Index: Trend away from target (0.72 in 2024).
  • Indicator 2 on the proportion of populations within species with an effective population size > 500 has no available data.

  • There is only one indicator on the proportion of fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels, which has a trend away from the target (62.33% in 2021).

  • Overall progress: Over the past 50 years (1970–2020), the average size of monitored wildlife populations has shrunk by 73%.

  • Regional difference: At a regional level, the fastest declines have been seen in Latin America and the Caribbean – a concerning 95% decline – followed by Africa (76%) and the Asia and the Pacific (60%).

  • Between 2000 and 2020, the world gained 130 Mha of tree cover, which is a 3% increase over the 2000 baseline.
  • This represents an average rate of 6.5 Mha of tree cover gained per year. However, this is off track from meeting the target, which would need increasing tree cover by an additional 220 Mha, or nearly 22 Mha per year, between 2021 and 2030.

  • There is still no sign that methane emissions from fossil fuel operations are falling.
  • It is estimated that methane emissions from these activities total 124 million tonnes (Mt) a year: oil is the largest source at 45 Mt, followed by coal at 43 Mt, and natural gas at 36 Mt. A further 20 Mt comes from bioenergy production and consumption, largely from the incomplete combustion of traditional biomass used for cooking and heating in developing economies.

Hydrogen

  • Global deployment of low-emissions hydrogen continues to grow, albeit from a very low base. In 2025, production is estimated to have reached close to 1 Mt, accounting for less than 1% of total hydrogen supply.

Road Transport

  • Sales of electric cars increased by more than 20% in 2025 to around 21 million, and are expected to rise again in 2026 and account for 28% of all cars sold worldwide.
  • Progress in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles is more uneven.

Steel
