A bright idea

Swap your old lightbulbs and reduce CO2

Your Challenge

This challenge is all about swapping old, inefficient lightbulbs for energy efficient LEDs.

To get started, we recommend you carry out a lightbulb inspection! This means going around your home and noting if any bulbs are broken, need replacing, or are not energy efficient. Also note down what type of bulb it is, whether it’s a bayonet or screw fitting, the wattage required, and which room it’s in so you can choose between cool – bright light for kitchens and bathrooms and warm softer light for bedrooms.

Take your list to the supermarket or look online to find energy efficient replacements for your bulbs. There are lots to choose from and the cost of LED bulbs has reduced substantially in recent years.

Why you're doing this

Older forms of lightbulb such as halogen, incandescent and fluorescent tubes use more energy than LED equivalents. Switching to an LED bulb can reduce your energy consumption from lighting by up to 90%.[1] LED bulbs not only use less energy, but they also last longer and can be recycled with WEEE waste, whereas typical household lightbulbs go in the general rubbish.

How you'll make a difference

Swapping your bulbs helps to save money, energy and the planet. The less energy we consume from lighting, the lower the energy footprint from our homes – and reduced energy consumption means less dependence on fossil fuels.
