Make oat milk

Save packaging by making your own oat milk

Your Challenge

Making oat milk is simple. All you need is a blender, a muslin cloth – and some rolled oats! If you want a creamier milk, add a small handful of cashew nuts and dried coconut shavings when you blend. You could also sweeten it with a date or a teaspoon of something else sweet. Here is a simple step by step:

  • Pop a mug of oats (120g) into a blender.
  • Add 800ml of water (more water for thinner milk, less for creamier milk).
  • Blend it for 30-40 seconds.
  • Strain it through a clean tea towel or muslin cloth.
  • Refrigerate and use within five days. Easy!

There are many benefits to drinking packaged milk alternatives that have been fortified with vitamins and minerals. If nutrition is a concern, speak to a nutritionist or dietitian before replacing your milk alternative permanently.

Why you're doing this

Milk alternatives are growing in popularity as a more sustainable alternative to dairy milk. Milk alternatives have a very low carbon footprint compared to dairy milk.[1] But nothing beats making it yourself.

How you'll make a difference

By making it yourself you can select additional flavours and control the amount of sugar you add making it better for your health and your palate. Other than reducing the demand on dairy milk, it also reduces the amount of packaging we dispose of by swapping a carton (which can be difficult to recycle) for one paper bag of oats (which is easily recycled at home).
