Source to stream - delivering nutrient reduction in UK rivers

Drawing on new research commissioned by WWF-UK, the Source to Stream report explores how the UK can achieve meaningful reductions in nutrient pollution and restore river health. Combining evidence from a literature review with detailed modelling across five river catchments, the report assesses the effectiveness of agricultural regulations, wastewater improvements, farming incentives and voluntary measures in reducing nitrogen and phosphorus pollution.

The findings show that stronger compliance with existing regulations, alongside planned wastewater treatment upgrades, could deliver substantial nutrient reductions in the near term. However, long-term recovery will also require wider adoption of proven farming practices, better monitoring, and targeted action to address legacy nutrient pollution stored in soils and groundwater.

WWF-UK calls for a catchment-specific approach that reflects local environmental conditions, improved enforcement, a robust nitrogen standard for rivers, and greater integration of climate adaptation into freshwater policy. Together, these actions can accelerate ecological recovery, improve water quality, and support healthier, more resilient rivers across the UK.
