On this day we celebrate endangered species!
To celebrate Endangered Species Day, we’d love to invite you to learn more about some of these amazing animals. We’ve got some fun and easy ways to join in—whether it's quizzing your nature knowledge or getting creative with some animal-themed crafts.
What do mountain gorillas, giant pandas, black rhinos and tigers have in common?
They're all on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and WWF-UK members are helping to boost their numbers.

Thanks to over 30 years of support from IGCP, partner organisations, and local communities, the IUCN downgraded mountain gorilla status from ‘critically endangered’ to ‘endangered’ in 2018.

For almost 50 years, WWF has worked with the Chinese government and local communities to protect the iconic giant panda and its habitat. A major milestone was reached in 2016, when its conservation status was downgraded from ‘Endangered' to ‘Vulnerable’. Their population has continued to grow with over 1,800 now estimated to be living in the wild.

While still critically endangered, in late 2023, Kenya’s black rhino population surpassed 1,000—a remarkable comeback from fewer than 400 in the 1980s. By December 2024, the number had risen to 1,059. This brings Kenya closer to its goal of reaching 2,000 black rhinos by 2037.

There are around 5,500 wild tigers globally (Global Tiger Forum, 2023). While these iconic big cats are endangered and occupy around 8% of their historical range, this number represents a remarkable increase since tiger numbers reached a record low of as few as 3,000 in 2010.
