URGENT ACTION NEEDED AS WILDFIRES SURGE ACROSS SCOTLAND

As recent Highland wildfires have been reported as the biggest in Scotland’s history [1], WWF Scotland’s calling on the Scottish Government to take immediate and decisive action to tackle the climate crisis.

Recent weeks have seen a troubling increase in wildfires across the country, with experts linking the surge to increasingly erratic and extreme weather patterns.

These fires are putting communities and emergency services at risk while destroying precious habitats and wildlife.

Claire Daly, Head of Policy and Advocacy at WWF Scotland, said:

“The rise in the number of wildfires we’re witnessing is deeply concerning. Our increasingly unpredictable weather is undoubtedly playing a part in creating perfect burning conditions, which is having a devastating impact on nature and people in Scotland.

The Scottish Government needs to take control and meet the climate crisis head on. We don’t need any more warm words; we need urgent and targeted action. Ministers know what needs to be done, they must now do the right thing."
