A Major Win for Tropical Forests

Tropical forests are essential for regulating the climate. Their destruction could add around 1°C to global heating, accelerate species extinction, reduce food sources, and displace entire populations. Protecting them has never been more important.

Yet, forest loss and destruction have been getting worse. Around the world, tropical forests are continually being cleared to meet a growing demand for beef, soy, palm oil and timber. Today, tropical forests are at the center of a global deforestation crisis, with forests like the Amazon nearing a 'tipping point' from which they might never recover. 

Now, the UK Government has announced that it will invest £400 million in the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), an initiative that will reward countries for protecting tropical forests.

The announcement builds on funding commitments already made by Brazil, Norway, Indonesia, France, Germany and others; nations standing together to keep tropical forests standing.  

Importantly, at least 20% of payments are intended to reach Indigenous Peoples and local communities, who have long been among the most effective stewards of tropical forests.

By backing the TFFF, the UK is taking a vital step to protect the forests we all rely on for food and climate stability, and which are home to extraordinary wildlife.
