The Amazon River Basin
The Amazon River Basin
The Amazon River Basin is subject to extreme seasonal changes during the year. Amazon rivers provide a range of habitats. These include swamps, marshes, and streams.
Each habitat hosts different types of wildlife. These waterways go through major annual flood cycles, affecting the region's ecology and landscape.
As the drainage system of the Amazon Basin, the Amazon River and its 1,100 tributaries play important roles in the ecology of the basin.
The Amazon River comes a close second after the Nile as the world’s longest river and we're working to conserve its vital freshwater resources.
Water is life
Water is life
Our objective is to maintain healthy and free-flowing rivers. For example, we are working to improve fishing regulations and transform the way hydropower development is planned in the Amazon region, advocating for sustainable hydropower programmes that take into account environmental considerations and ensure river flow.
Healthy river flowing are crucial for people as well as for threatened freshwater biodiversity, including river dolphins.
