Red squirrel

Although now increasingly rare, if you’re in the right place at the right time you might be able to spot a red squirrel. In Scotland and Ireland, you’ll have a much better chance of seeing them. In England, the best places to spot the red squirrel is on the Isle of Wight, Brownsea Island, on the Formby coast or in the pine forests of Northumberland and the Lake District.

Robin

The robin is probably the UK’s favourite bird, its distinctive colouring makes it hard to miss. Although they can be spotted all year round, robins are known for being symbolic of the festive period.

Snowdrops

You might be surprised to see flowers in the winter months but snowdrops flower between January-March, meaning that you might be able to spot them on a winter walk.

Red fox

Foxes are frequently seen throughout the UK and a high number live in urban areas, meaning that they’re a mammal that most people are familiar with. They are active at dawn and dusk but can be shy so you’d have to be lucky to see one.

Blue tit

This striking bird is easy to spot on a winter’s day. Their bright colourings make them one of our most recognisable garden birds.

Rowan

Rowan berries can be seen from August to January, they are a bright orangey-red colour so are hard to miss. The berries are safe to eat and can be made into a tasty jam!

Holly

Holly leaves remain green all-year round, making them an iconic festive species. Its bright red clusters of berries are an important food source for birds over winter, but they’re poisonous to humans so make sure you don’t eat any!
