Go renewable

Make the switch to renewable energy

Your Challenge

This may seem like a big step but it’s not as complicated as you might think – you don’t have to install solar panels to achieve this challenge.

To get started:

  • Find out what energy supplier and tariff you’re using for your home. Where does the energy come from under this tariff? If it’s from fossil fuels, or a mixture of fossil fuels and renewables, you could move to a 100% renewable tariff. To do this, go to a price comparison website and set your requirements to filter by renewable tariffs. This will help you achieve a competitive rate while also protecting the planet.
  • If you want a little more money in your budget, you could look for energy suppliers that only produce and provide renewable energy. These are often not available on price comparison websites and instead you have to go to them directly for quotes. A useful guide on the greenest energy companies can be found on the Ethical Consumer magazine website.[1]
  • If you’re already on a green tariff you can still check whether your energy provider is linked to fossil fuels, or if they are making the transition to only provide renewables.
  • If you want to take this a step further, you could look into installing renewables on or around your home and check out some of our other energy saving challenges.

Why you're doing this

Electricity generated by burning fossil fuels such as coal and gas contribute directly to global warming and pollution. In order for us to achieve a future where climate change is slowed and the impacts around the world are lessened, we must reduce emissions from fossil fuels. This requires us to move away from fossil fuels as a source of energy and instead move to clean, renewable energy sources. You can help this transition by changing to a tariff or supplier that uses only renewable energy sources.

How you'll make a difference

Switching to clean energy is essential to shift the world to a low-carbon economy by reducing the demand for fossil fuels, and will also reduce pollution.
