Your Challenge
This month, switch the scrolling for strolling – with a touch of forest immersion. Fully lose yourself for an hour or two in a forest and discover how good it makes you feel.
- Walk mindfully in your local woods. If you don't have a forest nearby, any walk in nature will do.
- Notice nature’s sights and sounds – hear birdsong, observe wildlife, touch tree bark and watch the light change.
- Breathe mindfully – this truly is a natural spa retreat for your body and mind.
- Most importantly get away from your TV and computer, turn off your phone and soak up some fresh air, flora and fauna.
- You don’t have to do this alone – you could take the family, meet up with friends, or check out nearby nature walks and see what kinds of animals, birds and trees you can spot.
Japanese medics have long prescribed a technique called 'forest bathing' to boost mental and spiritual health. You can find out more about the study here: https://tfb.institute/scientific-research/

Why you're doing this
Life’s challenges affect all of us and can damage our health. A couple of hours of mindful exploration in forests can lower blood pressure and stress hormone levels and improve memory and focus. Trees release chemicals that boost our immune system. Studies in Japan led to ‘shinrin-yoku’ (forest bathing) becoming a national health programme. Connecting with nature has been found to increase wellbeing. So take a break from stress and breathe in the woods for a while, to boost your mental and physical wellbeing.
How you'll make a difference
As well as making a difference to your wellbeing, you’ll be connecting with the natural world we live in and reminding yourself about the importance of preserving it. More time outside means less time inside on electronic devices, which use energy and increase our carbon footprint.
