The scale and impact of food waste in UK primary production
Currently in the UK, the reported food waste figure of 9.5million tonnes excludes farm stage. Globally, 33-40% of all food produced is wasted, with an estimated 15.3% of this occurring before the food even makes it off farm. Agriculture is responsible for an estimated 30% of GHG emissions and 80% of deforestation worldwide. Simultaneously, 7 million people in UK live in food insecurity. Hidden Waste highlights the extent to which allowing food waste on UK farms to remain hidden stunts our ability to improve food security and reduce the environmental impact of our food system.
