What can your business do to reduce its impact?

Climate change and nature loss pose a huge threat to our economy and businesses of every kind. To meet the challenge we face, we urgently need to cut global greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the impact of production and consumption by half by 2030.

Follow our four steps to greening your business.

1. TALK TO YOUR BOSS

There are hundreds of different initiatives that companies are part of but to be effective, and to have real impact, you need to ensure your business commitments and targets are science based and time bound.

One of the most effective ways to do this is by setting a 1.5°C target through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi helps companies to set targets that are consistent with the levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Hundreds of progressive businesses have done so already. Has yours?

Find out more about the Science Based Targets initiative here.

2. Understand your impact

If you haven’t looked into this before, think about what resources your business depends on. Is it access to fresh water? Is it certain raw materials? How can you look to protect these vital resources so that your business can rely on them in the future too?

Educate yourself on these topics by signing up for our business newsletter. Then when we release a new report you’ll be the first to know.

3. TALK TO YOUR BOARD

Talk to your colleagues, management team and board about the importance of making time-bound, science based commitments like the SBTi.

We have several films that can help your colleagues and board to understand the urgency and the scale of the changes we need to make in the next few years. Host a virtual screening of Our Planet: Our Business or Our Planet: Too Big To Fail where you work to gather momentum internally on the issues.

You can find more information about screening our films below.

4. Use your voice

Your business has an extraordinary opportunity to make real changes and encourage millions of people to change their behaviours. But it can also join other progressive businesses on this journey.

Lend your voice to the following campaigns.

Do you know where your pension is invested?

It’s important that your pension is invested sustainably so it doesn’t damage the world that you want to retire into. Businesses can help substantially by changing their default pension fund to a sustainable fund. Find out how to do this with Make My Money Matter

Join a coalition for nature

By joining forces with other businesses through coalitions like Business for Nature, the global business community can help advocate for nature at upcoming global events like the UNFCCC in Glasgow and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in China.

How can WWF help?

WWF supports companies through this process, validating emission reduction targets against the latest science, developing technical knowledge and communicating the benefits of setting a science-based target.
